Hello again Jerry,
Thanks for the valve cover info. You refer to the ‘67/’68 covers – do you mean the chromed stamped steel units? Also, the Comp Cam roller rockers you are utilizing, are these full roller rockers or the roller tipped units that pivot on the steel ball? I have always used the “Raised O” rockers and my 400 will have a 3" stroke making it about a 325 inch motor. Should be fun.
Thanks again,
Paul

Yes, the ’67-68 covers are stamped steel covers.

Hi Jerry,
I have your book and as you know there are many articles on the actual measurements of stripes that came out of the factory. The 69 assembly manual has the measurement of a 3/8" gap and a 1/4 " pin stripe. My friends original paint car has 1/4" gap with a 5/16 pin stripe. Given the varience of measurements of actual stripes, could there be leeway in the judging criteria ? Where did 9/32 for both come from ? I am not in any way questioning your expertise but there seems to be a discrepancy on actual and accepted stripe measurements. Thanks
Scott

The measurement data that I have came from original survivor cars that we’ve certified over the years. All have been just about the same as I had stated to you. Hope this helps. The .250" pin stripe is not correct. Has never been and you would get docked in Concours class with them.

Shoebox Paul Performance

Hi Jerry,
I am putting together a 400 small block with updated 291 head casting. I recently acquired a “140” cam set and a low profile cross ram. Looking at pictures of this manifold in use, all the engines are sporting the factory finned aluminum covers, the ones with the crossed flag emblem and the oil drippers. I plan on using roller rocker arms with 7/16" rocker studs and would really like to install stud girdles. My question: do the factory covers allow usage of roller rockers? I would think the answer is no. Do you know of a replacement set of covers that I could use either with or without the stud girdels?
Thanks for your help,
Paul

Paul, the Z28 valve covers will not work with a stud girdle. Not enough clearance. I do have Comp Cam roller rockers on my Stock Eliminator engine and I wanted to use the factory covers. I was able to do this with the aid or a super thick Fel Pro valve cover gasket. Ask someone about them. But again, I think there is more rocker arm clearance with the ‘67-68 302 valve covers. You do not need a stud girdle. I wind my Stocker up to 8600 rpm and have never had an issue. Up until last year, we were only allowed stock rocker arms but that rule changed last year. I ran the stock “O” stamped Z28 rockers last season and never broke one. They are what’s best for these engines. Bullitt proof. Ask some engine builders about aftermarket valve covers. I’m not a big fan of them. Also remember that you cannot turn the ’69 v/covers upside down either as the stock rockers hit the inside of the valve covers. We have repaired many of these covers. Good luck!

Scott's Z Restoration

Hi Jerry
I just measured the rally stripes on a 1 owner, original paint 69 Z-28 and the outer pin stripe is 3/8 with a space of 1/4 " from the main stripe. As you know this is opposite of the assembly manual. I painted my car to match the original paint car and not per the manual. Am I going to get point deductions at a show? Both cars are Norwood cars.
Thanks
Scott

Scott, you will get point deductions if you did not apply the stripes correctly and in the true position. The gap and pin stripe is 9/32 or .281". I have covered this in great detail in my Camaro fact books which have been out now for over 20 years. Stencils & Stripes Unlimited makes the perfect stripe kit for the Z28 so no mistakes can be made. This kit also has original photos to aid in laying out the stripes. I own two survivor cars and both are almost identical. Good luck!

My uncle is the original owner of a 1966 GTO. Black with Red interior. With the standard v8. He ordered the car with 3spd on the tree. He still has all the paperwork/order/build sheets for this car. How rare is this GTO with the 3 on the tree option?

An original owner 1966 GTO-very cool. Not many one owner cars are left from the muscle car era. Your best bet to determine production numbers for the GTO is to contact PHS (Pontiac Historical Services). You can order a report with your VIN number that tells you what you already know about your car, but also provides you with production numbers in various configurations. The PHS guys are very knowledgable and will usually take the time to discuss just about any car, especially a one owner 66 GTO. Their website is: http://phs-online.com/

Thanks for the question.

Hi Jerry,

I am in the process of restoring my 69 Z28’s 302 back to factory spec as it was previously running aftermarket hydraulic cam and lower compression installed by previous owner.

The car is currently running a 3.73 rear and a Tremec 5 speed (with original M20 stored). I assume the 2.87 1st gear of the Tremec should assist street driveability compared to the 2.52 of the M20?

Can you advise ideal timing and jetting for best compromise of driveability and power? And at the risk of Blasphemy to the purists, are there any mods you would recommend to the factory specs? (Noting that the cars purpose is to be driven and enjoyed as opposed to being shown!)

Any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Brett.

Brett, you will have to call me on this. Too much to write here, 410-781-0418. I’ll give you some basics…….36 degrees total timing, your altitude is needed for your jetting, spark plugs, AC 44’s or Champion J12YC is the best heat range, etc. Its sounds like you changed the whole spec platform of the 302 Z28 engine. I would not have done that. I have built dozens that will run in the 13 second zone with street tires and closed exhaust using all stock correct parts and my Stock Eliminator tricks.

I have a 69 Camaro with SBC, M20, and the kick out oil pan interferes with getting the oil filter out. I have to loosen the header to change the oil filter. I’ve tried Wix’s smallest filter but it still doesn’t clear. I’m considering a remote oil filter. Where is the best area to mount a remote oil filter? Thanks.

Steve, I’m not sure what to tell you as I have never done any mods like this. In NHRA Stock Eliminator, the class that I run in class racing, you have to have a stock style oil pan. What I can tell you is Wix are the best oil filters on the market. You may have to network with someone who has trans am experience. Good luck!

Tony's big block General

Hi Jerry, I would like to surprise hubby with new emblems for his camero. He currently has a 69 camero with the z28 emblems on it . He would like to change that to ss emblems. Are the holes the same ?? He just bought the car and is currently tweaking it to his tastes. Since the car has a big block and he just put a Muncie? Transmission in it …. He feels a ss is more appropriate , but doesn’t want to drill new holes. Ty , marianne

Marianne, the holes are NOT the same. Each emblem has it’s own drilled pattern from the factory. You cannot replace the Z emblems without filling in holes and drilling new ones for the SS emblems. Good luck.

Bob,
Are you planning on attending the Mecum Auction in Indianapolis May 16th-20th? What do you think will be the top Ford sale for the weekend?

Jerry,
I plan on attending Mecum Auction on Thursday and Friday. The Indy swap meet is also Friday and Saturday at Marion County fairgrounds, only 3-4 miles from Mecum Auction at Indiana State fairgrounds. I’m fairly certain the 67 Shelby Super Snake will definitely be the highest priced Ford and probably of the entire auction. Several other Fords in the Richard Ellis collection will also do very well in my opinion. I personally like the Nicholson SOHC Comet also from the Ellis Collection.

Bob, I’ve got a 1970 428SCJ Mach I with med ivy green interior. I’m looking for new door panels and non a/c dash. Do you know of anyone making this color? Also who in your opion makes the best magnum 500 wheels.

Thanks

Richard,
Unfortunately the dash pads and deluxe door panels are not available reproduction in all of the factory colors. I would suggest you start with black door panels rather than white to dye. The green will cover the black better than white. National Parts Depot (NPD) also carries custom matched final dye in medium Ivy Green. NPD also has the Ivy Green carpet for door panels. Personally I would recommend professional interior vinyl dye sprayed from paint gun rather than spray bomb. visit: http://www.npdlink.com/ or call 800-521-6104

Tom's Muscle Car Barn Bay General

Bob,
I just recently acquired a 1973 Mustang Mach 1 that sat in a barn for the past 20 years. Turns out the car is a Q code with a factory hurst four speed (T-5 I think). Do you know about how many of these came from the factory like this? I’m planning on ordering a Marti report soon.

Thomas,
Kevin Marti has the figures on production numbers. I suggest you order a deluxe report so he can break it down to Q-Code 4 speed and T5. I’m sure your looking at a very limited production number when you include the export option.

Hi Jerry,

I was looking at some DZ302 blocks on ebay and was hoping you might be able to give an opinion on whether the stamping looked legit or restamp? (I know this may be difficult from pics alone).

Thanks
Brett

Replaced clutches in 3.55 742 sure grip rear end. Seems to work fine except when making sharp turns at low speed. Tires bark (don’t slip). Is this a serious problem or will it wok itself out?

It will only get worse. The problem is lubrication-related. LSDs require a “friction modified” lubricant, Chrysler used to sell a clutch-type-specific fluid. Decades ago, this was replaced with an additive for standard gear oil, the P/N is 4318060AB, which you can get at any dealer. If the problem persists, or you have used a non-OEM additive, you may have to suck out all the existing lube and replace with fresh oil mixed with the correct additive.

I have a 64 dodge 880, i think its a custom. on the steering wheel it has the 50th anniversary emblem but i was under the impression that the anniversary edition was a gold interior and exterior package. i don’t really know much information about 880’6 but i’m trying to find more information about them. mines is the 4 door sedan. How rare are the 880 sedans?

turquoise interior with white exterior.

Aaron-

All 1964 Dodges were 50th anniversary.

The 880 was a stopgap model, designed to fill the void when Dodge discontinued “large” cars for ’62. The dealers screamed bloody murder, so a “parts bin” restyled Chrysler Newport was hastily introduced, using carry-over ’61 Dodge front end sheetmetal. For ’63-64, a new front clip “tin” was introduced.

For 1964, the Custom 880 (VIN 5423) sold about 18,000 units, incl. hardtops, sedans, and wagons.

Would like to find out how many 1969 Nova SS were painted Rally Green or where I could find that information? Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

Martin, unfortunately, GM did not keep records like that on Nova, Chevelle or Camaro. Chevrolet only tracked and recorded the standard RPO options in order to see how options sold and whether or not to drop certain options for the next model year. I know that Corvette colors were tracked and recorded during the model year but not the others. Sorry, wish I had better news for you.
